CORE VALUES

We...

American Rescue Plan Act of 2021

The Hamburg Central School District is seeking input from our stakeholders regarding how we can use the federal American Rescue Plan money to help us address the immediate consequences of the last  16 months, while at the same time build longer-term capacity that will benefit the children and families of our school district for the future.

HCSD's expectations for prioritizing and maximizing these federal funds:

Proposed Initial Steps 2021

Provide Summer Learning and Enrichment for Students in Grades PK-12

HCSD recognizes the need for students to have opportunities to engage students and families in fun, creative, and educational programming that reinforces and enriches school year learning.  Students in the Hamburg Connects program will benefit from programming that integrates recreation with enrichment and remediation activities that focus on positive relationships among peers and with adults.  The HCSD Connects Summer Program will serve approximately 460 students in grades PreK through 12.

Connections: 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9

Offer Credit Recovery for Students in Grades 9-12

HCSD will provide in-person opportunities for students that require course/credit recovery in grades 9-12.  This program will support approximately 75 students

Connections: 2, 3, 7, 9

Teacher Professional Development and Training

HCSD understands that effective professional development enables educators to develop the knowledge and skills they need to address students’ academic and social emotional needs.

Professional development will focus on recertifying all staff in Youth Mental Health First Aid;  incorporating Trauma Informed Care; and providing evidence-based strategies and resources to ensure students are making adequate progress toward literacy and numeracy acquisition.

Connections: 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9

Expand Before/After School Academic, Extra-Curricular, & Intramural Activities

Athletics and extracurricular activities play a critical part in the lives of students.  We will expand academic support for students before and after school at the elementary level as well as after school for secondary students; and we will continue to offer the virtual Homework Assistance program for students in grades 6-12.  We will create new opportunities for students to participate in at all levels, that encourage creativity, build confidence, and lead to stronger connections between students, peers and the school.

Connections: 5, 6, 7, 9

Increase Mental Health Staff

The COVID-19 pandemic caused students and families to face emotional and social challenges due to the loss of socialization and support services.  HCSD will increase our current mental health staff by increasing a part-time position from .4 to .6 and by adding one additional school social worker for a two year appointment . School social workers are trained mental health professionals who assist students and families with mental health and behavioral concerns, provide positive behavioral supports, along with academic and classroom support.

Connections: 3, 5, 6, 8, 9

Increase Academic Intervention Staff

HCSD plans to increase our academic intervention staff by adding an additional reading teacher, as well as a 1.5 math teacher, for grades K-5 for a two year appointment.  The academic intervention staff provide direct services to students, using evidence-based practices to identify and support skill deficits.

Connections: 3, 5, 6, 8, 9
