The Hamburg Central School District is the first district in New York State to have an elementary health teacher. It is taught by Mary Lynn Gallagher, who is New York State Certified in Health Education Grades K - 12. Ms. Gallagher travels to all four elementary buildings within the school district which are Armor, Boston Valley, Charlotte Avenue, and her home base, Union Pleasant Elementary schools.
Certain components of elementary health are mandated by the NYS Department of Education, such as HIV/AIDS, CHILD ABUSE, ABDUCTION, NUTRITION and BULLYING. The Health Curriculum is taught as a "building block" approach. The material taught is developmentally appropriate for each grade level, with a sensitive method of instructional delivery.
We are very fortunate to have our elementary health curriculum to make our students aware of their health and safety. What is nice about Ms. Gallagher's position as health teacher is that she instructs her students every year from Kindergarten to 5th grade, and watches them grow from year to year.
Along with the N.Y.S mandates, other areas of health that are taught are: Teeth, Safety, Tobacco, Personal Growth (4th grade girls only), Growth & Development (5th grade), Alcoholism. You may view each of the grade level units that are taught. They are located in column to the left on this page where the grade levels are listed.
